What is this movie is about?/Elevator Pitch: A modern version of star-crossed lovers who have to battle through tragedy and time to be together.
Plot Summary:
Mitsuha and Taki are two teens living vastly different lives. Mitsuha lives a rather dull life, rife with cultural tradition in the small countryside town of Itomori while Taki lives in the fast-paced city of Tokyo. Fed up with her cyclic life, Mitsuha longs to experience life in Tokyo and wishes to become a handsome Tokyo boy in her next life. Her dreams partially come to fruition when both characters swap bodies back and forth. As they swap, both try to live life through the other with unforeseen consequences as they each develop a bond with the other.
Did You Know:
The red braided cord that Mitsuha wears represents the invisible red string of fate that is said to connect someone to their fated person, according to Japanese tradition.
This is the first anime film not made by Studio Ghibli or Hayao Miyazaki to gross ten billion Yen at the Japanese box office (about US$98 million). It was also the second highest grossing anime film before being surpassed by Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train (2020) four years later.
Writer-director Makoto Shinkai personally found his film to be "incomplete, unbalanced" due to time and budget constraints.
Radwimps wrote all new English covers of their original songs for the film's international debut in English speaking territories.

Remaining Questions:
What precipitated Mitsuha and Taki to start switching bodies?
Why do most anime characters seem Caucasian?
Why do the messages disappear at the exact moment Taki goes looking for them?
Do Mitsuha and Taki actually get together?
If a falling rock created that kind of crater, wouldn't it have destroyed a lot more than the town?
